World Water Day, observed annually on March 22, is a significant United Nations event that underscores the importance of freshwater. It serves as a platform to raise awareness about the global water crisis and advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Currently, 2.2 billion people lack access to safe water, making this day even more crucial .
The central focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): ensuring water and sanitation for all by 2030. Each year, UN-Water sets a theme for World Water Day. In 2023, the theme was “Accelerating Change”, emphasizing the need for swift action. For 2024, the theme is “Leveraging Water for Peace”. This theme highlights water as both a tool for peace when shared cooperatively and a potential source of conflict when access is denied or unfairly distributed. The goal is to balance everyone’s needs and make water a catalyst for a more peaceful world 1.
In the coming years:
2025 will focus on glaciers, coinciding with the International Year of Glacier Preservation.
2026 will concentrate on the role of water and sanitation in gender equality.
