How Rainy Filters Improve Groundwater Recharge
By Allegiance Water Management, Vadodara
Ask anyone who
has run a recharge system for a few years what went wrong, and the answer is
almost always the same: it got choked. Leaves, dust, bird droppings and fine
silt wash off the roof with the first rain and settle inside the borewell or
recharge well. Slowly, the water stops going in, and the system that was meant
to save groundwater ends up overflowing into the drain.
The fix starts
at the very first point where water enters the system: the filter. That is
where Rainy filters make a real difference. In this post, we explain how they
work, why they help groundwater recharge, and how to pick the right model.
Why Groundwater Recharge Fails Without a Good Filter
A recharge
structure is only as good as the water going into it. Unfiltered roof runoff
causes three problems:
•
Clogging: Fine silt seals the pores in the soil
and the screen of the borewell, so water can't seep down.
•
Contamination: Organic debris and dirt end up in
the same aquifer you draw drinking or process water from.
•
High maintenance: Chambers and wells need
frequent desilting, which costs time and money.
A reliable
rainwater harvesting filter stops all of this at the source, so the recharge
system keeps working season after season.
What Is a Rainy Filter?
A Rainy filter
is a compact, self-cleaning rainwater filter that fits directly on your roof
downpipe. It separates clean water from leaves and debris before the water
reaches your sump, borewell, open well or recharge well. It needs no
electricity, has no moving parts to wear out, and is designed to handle heavy
Indian monsoon showers.
How a Self-Cleaning Rainwater Filter Works
Rainy filters
work on a simple physical idea that uses cohesive force and centrifugal force:
1.
Rainwater from the roof enters the filter through the
inlet.
2.
The water spins and spreads across a multi-surface
SS-304 stainless steel screen with 250 micron openings.
3.
Cohesive force makes clean water cling to the screen
and pass through to the clean water outlet.
4.
Leaves, dust and debris can't follow, so they flush out
through the open drain outlet.
Because the
debris is washed away continuously by the flowing water, the screen cleans
itself during every shower. The open-ended, non-clog design means the filter
keeps working even during intense rain of up to 75 mm per hour, with filtration
efficiency above 90%. All it needs is a gravity head of just over one foot.
How Rainy Filters Improve Groundwater Recharge
Cleaner water means faster, longer-lasting recharge
When only
filtered water reaches the ground, soil pores and well screens stay open. Water
keeps percolating at a good rate, year after year, instead of slowing down as
silt builds up.
Protects your borewell and aquifer
Debris that
enters a borewell is almost impossible to remove. A borewell recharge filter
keeps that dirt out and protects the quality of the groundwater you depend on.
Less maintenance for your recharge system
With most of
the dirt removed at the downpipe, silt traps and recharge chambers fill up much
more slowly, so desilting is needed far less often.
More water actually reaches the ground
A clogged
filter overflows and wastes water. A self-cleaning filter keeps letting water
through during the heaviest bursts of rain, which is exactly when most of the
year's water arrives.
Where Rainy Filters Are Used in a Rainwater Recharge System
One filter,
four common setups:
•
Storage in an underground sump: Filtered water
is stored for reuse in gardening, washing, flushing and more.
•
Direct borewell recharge: For smaller roofs,
around 100 m² or less, filtered water can go straight into the borewell through
its casing pipe.
•
Borewell recharge with V-wire technology: For
roofs larger than about 100 m², water passes through a recharge setup with a
V-wire screen, so higher volumes go down safely.
•
Open well recharge: Filtered water is led into
an existing open well to refill it naturally.
Ground
conditions vary, so the right option depends on your site. Water can sometimes
overflow from a borewell when the ground below is not taking it in fast enough,
and in that case a dedicated recharge well is the better choice.

Common to
all models: SS-304 food-grade multi-surface screen, 250 micron mesh,
UV-treated high-density polyethylene housing, gravity operated, filtration
efficiency above 90%.
For large
industrial roofs, we simply use several filters, one on each downpipe or group
of downpipes, so the whole roof is covered.
