Piezometer Maintenance Checklist: Best Practices
By Allegiance Water Management, Vadodara
A digital
piezometer is one of the easiest instruments on any site to forget about. It
sits quietly in its well, records data and asks for very little. That is
exactly why problems can go unnoticed for months: a SIM that ran out of
balance, a cable nicked during construction, a well slowly filling with silt.
By the time someone checks, there is a gap in the data, and possibly in your
CGWA compliance record.
Modern digital
water level recorders are built to need very little maintenance. But a few
simple checks at the right time keep your data accurate, complete and ready for
reporting. Here is the checklist we recommend.
Why Piezometer Maintenance Matters
•
Accurate data: Small problems such as sensor
drift or a shifted cable can quietly skew readings.
•
No gaps in records: Missing data is hard to
explain during audits and NOC renewals.
•
Longer instrument life: Catching damage early
prevents costly replacements.
•
Reliable decisions: Pumping, recharge and
planning decisions are only as good as the data behind them.
Monthly Piezometer Maintenance Checklist
1.
Check that the recorder display is on and showing a
sensible water level.
2.
Confirm the latest readings have reached the cloud or
dashboard.
3.
Check the power supply and any battery backup.
4.
Make sure the SIM card is active, recharged and has a
good signal.
5.
Look over the enclosure, cable and well cap for damage
or tampering.
6.
Scan the data for sudden jumps, flat lines or missing
periods.
Quarterly Piezometer Calibration Check
Every few
months, take a manual reading with a water level indicator and compare it to
the digital reading taken at the same time. If the difference is more than a
few centimetres, or keeps growing, the sensor may need a reset of its reference
level or a service check. Record both readings and the date. This simple step
is the best proof that your data can be trusted.
Pre-Monsoon DWLR Maintenance
•
Check that the well cap seals properly so rainwater and
runoff can't flow into the well.
•
Make sure the area around the well drains well and
won't flood.
•
Inspect cable entry points and the enclosure seals for
gaps.
•
Confirm the sensor is hanging deep enough to stay
underwater, even if levels drop sharply in summer.
•
Download and back up all data before the season starts.
Post-Monsoon and Annual Checks
•
Compare pre-monsoon and post-monsoon levels. This is
also the best record of how well your recharge system is working.
•
Carefully pull out the sensor, inspect it and clean it
if needed.
•
Check the cable along its full length for cuts, kinks
or worn insulation.
•
Measure the total depth of the well to see whether silt
is building up.
•
Review the year's data for long-term trends and gaps.
Water Level Sensor Cleaning: Do It Right
•
Pull the cable up slowly and steadily, never by jerking
or dragging it over sharp edges.
•
Rinse the sensor gently with clean water to remove silt
or deposits.
•
Use only a soft cloth or soft brush. Never poke the
sensor opening or use sharp tools.
•
Avoid strong chemicals unless the manufacturer allows
them.
•
Lower the sensor back to exactly the same depth, then
take a manual reading to confirm.
Observation Well Maintenance
The instrument
can only be as good as the well it sits in. Over time, silt can settle at the
bottom and the screen can partly clog, making the well respond slowly to real
changes in groundwater. If the measured well depth drops noticeably, or levels
respond much more slowly than before, the well may need flushing or
redevelopment. Keep the well locked and clearly marked, and never use a
monitoring well for pumping.
Piezometer Troubleshooting: Common Problems
and Fixes
|
Problem |
Likely Cause |
What to Do |
|
Piezometer data not updating online |
SIM expired, weak signal or power issue |
Recharge SIM, check signal and power, restart unit |
|
Reading
stuck at zero or flat |
Sensor
above water level or cable damage |
Lower
sensor, inspect cable and connections |
|
Sudden spikes or drops |
Nearby pumping, cable movement or loose connection |
Secure cable, check connections, review pumping times |
|
Gradual
difference from manual reading |
Sensor
drift or cable stretch |
Re-set
reference level, arrange a service check |
|
Slow response to rain or pumping |
Silted or clogged observation well |
Measure depth, flush or redevelop the well |
Best Practices for Long-Term Performance
•
Keep a simple logbook of every visit, manual reading
and repair.
•
Mark the cable at the correct hanging depth so it can
always be reset accurately.
•
Lock the well cap and enclosure to prevent tampering.
•
Set up telemetry alerts for missing data so problems
are spotted the same day.
•
Back up data regularly, even when it is stored in the
cloud.
•
Follow the manufacturer's manual for any internal
servicing.
Piezometer AMC: Let Us Handle It
If your team is
busy running the plant, a piezometer AMC (annual maintenance contract) takes
the load off. A typical AMC covers scheduled site visits, manual cross-check
readings, sensor and cable inspection, telemetry checks, and a short report
after every visit, so your groundwater data stays reliable and compliance-ready
all year.
